SAMP Risk appoints Jonathon Valentine, insurance telematics pioneer, as Group CTO

Asset Performance Partners (APP) Group has appointed Jonathon Valentine as Group Chief Technology Officer, bringing one of the motor insurance market's most recognised connected-data experts into the power and renewable energy sector.

Lloyd's of London, June 2026 — Asset Performance Partners (APP) Group has appointed Jonathon Valentine as Group Chief Technology Officer, bringing one of the motor insurance market's most recognised connected-data experts into the power and renewable energy sector. In his new role, Valentine will lead the technology strategy for APP Group and its insurtech subsidiary, SAMP Risk — the first connected insurance platform for the power and renewable energy sector.

Valentine joins from ThingCo, the telematics service provider he co-founded in 2018 and which became widely regarded as the market leader in risk mitigation for motor insurers. As CTO, he won multiple industry awards including recognition in the CIO100 and the Top 10 CIO list, and took home the AI Award in 2025.

His career in connected insurance stretches back to the earliest days of telematics. He was the first employee at Insurethebox, the UK's first telematics-only motor insurer, where he served as Head of Innovation, helping to establish the foundations of what is now a mainstream approach to motor risk.

This is a fantastic opportunity to translate the lessons of over a decade in connected motor insurance into the energy market: using live asset data, IoT and machine learning to change how renewable energy risk is assessed, priced and managed.

— Jonathon Valentine, Group CTO

SAMP Risk uses proprietary plug-and-play telematics hardware installed at renewable energy sites to collect machine data in real time, feeding a live risk-scoring model that drives continuous risk management throughout the policy period. SAMP Risk is a Lloyd's Lab insurtech, headquartered in the Lloyd's building in central London.

Jonathon has built his career on a simple but powerful idea — that live data makes insurance work better for everyone. That's precisely what we're doing in renewable energy. Having someone with his track record of turning connected data into real underwriting and risk management outcomes is a significant step forward for the platform and for our insurer partners.

— Alistair Moodie, Chief Product Officer
